Poetry with Grade 5

10 days ago, Grade 5 students started working on poetry and, as an introduction exercise to imagery, they were given the picture below and asked to write poems on what they see. In groups, they worked on this picture since the first poem they were going to read and analyze was Daffodils by William Wordsworth.

In addition to this activity, after analyzing the poem, students were introduced to drawing the rhyme scheme of a poem and figures of speech and spent two periods on this topic. They practiced their new skills on the poem Daffodils, found the rhyme scheme and figures of speech in it. Along the way, we used this presentation (click to view)  and listened to the poem from the link below.

After they finished working on the poem in class, students were assigned to write a summary of the poem and find the meanings of the following words at home for the weekend:

Today, February 3rd, 2013, students finished their second and last poem of the volume, The Sea by James Reeves, and they have been assigned to do vocabulary, rhyme scheme and figures of speech exercises as homework during this week. 

1. Find the meanings of these words:
    * shaggy              * clashing
    * gnaw                 * hollos
    * rumbling           * dune
    * tumbling           * reedy
    * moan                * scarcely
    * roar                  * bound
    * snuff                 * tune
    * sniff                 * greasy

2. Draw the rhyme scheme of the poem.

3. Find the alliterations in the poem.
